Artist - Sculptor - Designer

Douglas Madaras designs and builds landmark architectural spaces, features, functional design elements and sculpted forms. The architectural and cultural renaissance of Asheville, North Carolina, has gained national and international recognition due in part to the purposeful hands and visionary eye of this popular Asheville to Ann Arbor artist-designer.

His combined architectural services are defined as Spatial Sculpting. From concept to completion, form and function manifest in his one-of-a-kind public venues; restaurants, bars, salons, corporate offices, various retail canvases and most recently, theaters. Numerous newspapers and magazines have recognized Asheville’s unique eateries, music venues and the general downtown experience Douglas helped to conceive and bring to life.

Douglas’ residential creations are considered livable art installations that comfort and intrigue. His handmade lighting, displays and fixtures add to the cohesive nature of his spatial designs which inspire architects, artists and designers alike. His palette consists of a broad range of materials including fiber-optic lighting, laminates, woods, metals and a broad range of found industrial objects.

Douglas is a self taught artisan. His experiences in the building trades, prop and set construction, and the spiritual arts combine to make him a master of his own art form: Spatial Sculpting. His eye for detail along with his project management skills and client / crew relationships makes him an sought after artist/designer. Douglas says that he is inspired by each waking day, travel, nature and by his design/business partner, wife, muse - Angela Cristin.

Douglas was raised in the deserts of Arizona. He served 6 years in the military specializing as a crash and rescue fire fighter. He has been active in numerous social/environmental causes that range from his support of Native American land rights to his work with Veterans for Peace. Most recently proactive in Lupus Research and toys with various social awareness programs. Douglas is a father of two sons: Derek, 28 and Bryon, 26. Douglas and his wife live in Ann Arbor Michigan.
